Job Overview:
We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic Senior Sustainability Manager to join our team, a leading conglomerate with diverse business interests across Southeast Asia. In this role, you will be responsible for driving and leading the sustainability strategy across the organization, ensuring that our operations align with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards. You will work closely with senior stakeholders, both internal and external, to integrate sustainability into our business practices and ensure regulatory compliance with sustainability reporting.
The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of experience working in a public-listed company in Malaysia, with a proven track record in managing senior stakeholders and executing sustainability strategies at a corporate level. You will be instrumental in shaping the company’s sustainability agenda, ensuring that we maintain leadership in sustainability across our industries.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Sustainability Strategy & Leadership:
- Lead the development and execution of the company’s sustainability strategy, ensuring it is integrated into the broader corporate strategy and aligns with regional and global sustainability goals.
- Develop short-term and long-term sustainability goals, KPIs, and action plans to meet the company’s ESG commitments.
- Drive key initiatives that enhance the company’s environmental, social, and governance practices across all business units.
- Promote a culture of sustainability across the organization, ensuring senior leadership and employees are engaged and committed to the company’s sustainability objectives.
2. Stakeholder Management:
- Engage and manage relationships with senior stakeholders, including executive leadership, board members, and key partners, to ensure alignment on sustainability objectives and initiatives.
- Represent the company in external forums, conferences, and meetings related to sustainability, building and maintaining relationships with regulators, investors, industry associations, and NGOs.
- Advise and support senior management in identifying opportunities for sustainable business practices and innovations that can drive both profitability and environmental/social impact.
3. ESG Reporting & Compliance:
- Oversee the preparation and submission of ESG reports and sustainability disclosures in compliance with local and international standards, including Securities Commission Malaysia’s sustainability reporting guidelines, GRI (Global Reporting Initiative), and other relevant frameworks.
- Ensure the company’s sustainability efforts are aligned with national and international regulations, and that sustainability initiatives meet the expectations of investors, regulators, and the public.
- Track and report on the company’s progress toward meeting its sustainability targets, identifying challenges and recommending improvements where necessary.
4. Risk Management & Sustainability Governance:
- Identify and assess sustainability-related risks (environmental, social, and governance), and lead efforts to mitigate those risks through strategic initiatives.
- Develop and enforce sustainability-related governance structures, ensuring compliance with sustainability standards, codes of conduct, and regulations across all business units.
- Work with legal and compliance teams to ensure sustainability-related risks are appropriately managed.
5. Data Analytics & Reporting:
- Lead the development of data analytics processes to measure the company’s sustainability performance, ensuring the collection and analysis of accurate ESG data.
- Provide insights to senior management on sustainability trends, competitor performance, and new regulations to inform business decision-making.
- Develop and deliver detailed reports, presentations, and briefings to senior management, board members, and external stakeholders on sustainability performance.
6. Innovation & Sustainable Practices:
- Drive innovation in sustainable products, services, and solutions across the conglomerate’s diverse business sectors.
- Encourage and lead the implementation of green technologies and processes that reduce the company’s carbon footprint, waste, and environmental impact.
- Collaborate with other departments (operations, HR, procurement, etc.) to ensure sustainability is integrated into all areas of business, including product development, supply chain management, and corporate culture.
7. Employee Engagement & Training:
- Lead initiatives to engage employees at all levels of the company in sustainability efforts, building a company-wide commitment to environmental and social responsibility.
- Develop and conduct training programs on sustainability, ESG reporting, and corporate responsibility to enhance employee understanding and participation in sustainability efforts.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Business Administration, or related fields. A Master’s degree (MBA or related) or relevant professional certifications (e.g., CSR certification, sustainability-focused qualifications) is a plus.
- At least 5 years of experience in a senior sustainability or corporate responsibility role within a public-listed company in Malaysia.
- Demonstrated experience in managing senior stakeholders, including executives and board members, and driving organizational change around sustainability.
- Deep knowledge of ESG reporting and sustainability frameworks such as GRI, TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures), and local sustainability regulations.
- Proven ability to develop, implement, and measure sustainability strategies and initiatives across large, complex organizations.
- Strong understanding of the business impact of sustainability, including its effect on profitability, risk management, brand reputation, and long-term growth.
- Experience in the conglomerate or multi-sector business model is highly preferred.
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to oversee multiple initiatives simultaneously.
- Fluent in English (written and spoken), with proficiency in Bahasa Malaysia being an advantage.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience working with international sustainability standards and green certifications (e.g., ISO 14001, LEED, etc.).
- Proven track record in influencing organizational culture and driving sustainability across diverse departments and regions.
- Knowledge of Southeast Asia-specific sustainability issues, regulations, and opportunities.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex sustainability concepts to senior stakeholders, investors, and external partners.
